STOP MOTION ANIMATIONS

When students were last in Studio 5 on the Friends campus, they were putting the final touches on sculptural masks that they spent the better part of the 3rd quarter researching, preparing preliminary drawings, and constructing from their final masks from cardboard. When classes moved on-line, students quickly adjusted to a digital space to learn the meticulous, and demanding, craft of stop-motion animation. After a few warm-up exercises to get accustomed to the software and set up their home studios, students got to work developing a series of short animations that included the Meet in the Middle Project, the 7-Step Drawing Project, the C.O.W.S Project, and the Jacob Lawrence: On the Move Project which required students to select a panel from Lawrence’s iconic migration series and use that as a basis for a 30-second animation. A selection of animation from these projects are included in this digital art exhibit.
